Townsville will cheer on one of its favourite sons this Friday when Josh King (15-3, 8KOs) steps into the ring for the main event at Townsville’s RSL Stadium. King will be taking on Chaiyong Sithsaithong (31-11-3, 22KOs) of Thailand, also known as ‘King Kong’, for the vacant WBO Oriental Lightweight title. Along with this title, the victor will also emerge with a top 15 world ranking.
King, who claimed the WBF Light Welterweight title in May has recorded two stoppage victories in his two 2013 performances, both over international opponents. He looks to continue this impressive form on Friday night.
Recently returning from a training camp in Thailand where he spent time sparring 2 division WBC champion Sirimongkol Singwangcha, King said, “This experience was unreal, Sirimongkol was a great guy and great to work with, I learnt a lot.”
The local expects a tough and fast paced fight from his Thai opponent with lots of punches to be thrown. King is more than ready, saying he has been working on defence and angles and says, “Training has been great and I couldn’t be happier.”
The undercard will see another Townsville favourite in action when Mark Flanagan (13-4, 8KOs) takes on Ghana born Ayitey Powers (18-22-1, 14KOs) in an 8 round battle at Cruiserweight.
Flanagan, who has fought primarily down south, will be having just his 2nd fight out of his past 11 in front of his home crowd.
Flanagan is the former WBO Oriental Light Heavyweight champion. Since losing that title in February to impressive New Zealander Daniel MacKinnon, he has moved to the Cruiserweight division, scoring two consecutive 2nd round stoppages.
Local Ryan Heck (3-1-1) will also take to the ring when he fights Brisbane based Filipino fighter, Michael Dan (3-6-1, 1KO) over 6 rounds at Light Middleweight. Heck is coming off an impressive and dominant performance over former state champion Sam Leone.
Also on the undercard, Brett Johnson will feature in a 5 round Super Middleweight contest against Cairns’ Jonathan Taylor. Townsville’s Jamie Allison will also fight in a Cruiseweight contest.
